Stuffed

28 pieces & 2 books

A project that explores my own created world of oddly stuffed shapes, strange textures and uncomfortable coziness through repurposed textiles. The textiles are taken out of their original context and placed into a new one, filled with my observations and obsessions.

Whilst on exchange in Tokyo for textile design, I worked on a project involving recycling of old kimonos into sculpture. A trip to my grandparents’ place sparked a new interest in this project. There, in the village of Hippolytushoef, I gathered blankets, napkins, picnic blankets and all kinds of textiles. I decided to see how I could repurpose them into something new, into these textile sculptures.

Each piece contains a story, a moment that was left behind. Together the collection gives nostalgic feelings through a new lens. Certain images that are printed on a piece give reference to earlier memories and/or stories. From a cocktail glass drunk during a class dinner to a piece of fruit gifted to me by a stranger. Stains are covered but also enhanced and showcased. The textiles have come alive again, full of stories and mysteries.
